"Teaching students in the school was rewarding and exciting. Touring the facilities of some of the agencies in Monte Cristi was enlightening. The drug/alcohol rehabilitation center showed the resiliency of the community and the people of the DR. The United States could take some lessons from this program."
"My visit to Orphanage Outreach was a life changing event! It makes me more determined to serve as a social worker and not just help my clients. As a social work student, this trip was an international learning opportunity that has expanded my curiosity and views on another culture."

Social Work Alternative Break Program

Professional social workers and social work students are invited to join Orphanage Outreach in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. Our mission is to meet real needs with real solutions.  Our volunteer focus is primarily in these areas:

  • English Education - Speaking English provides huge opportunities for educational and career opportunities. Many of the children in the rural areas where we work have a real desire to learn English, but there are very few English teachers. One of our goals in the communities where we work is that all children will be able to speak English. During your time with Orphanage Outreach, you might be teaching English with other Orphanage Outreach volunteers.
  • Literacy Education - Reading is a basic building block of learning.  One of our goals in the communities where we work is to help each children read at or above grade level. During your time with Orphanage Outreach , especially if you speak some English, you might be teaching literacy with other Orphanage Outreach volunteers.
  • Public Health Education - The largest health impact we can have in the communities where we serve is through public health education. You might be teaching public health education, especially if you have and interest in health and some knowledge of Spanish.
  • Medical and Dental Clinics - During certain times of the year, we provide rural health clinics. If you join us during a time that we are offering a clinic, you will likely be able to visit the clinic site.

For every four social work students, we encourage you to bring along one Spanish speaker. Contact the modern languages department at your school, and invite the Spanish majors to get involved on your social work trip. It's a great opportunity for Spanish Majors to practice and expand their Spanish.
