Health Corps ProfessionalsOrphanage Outreach is an American non-profit organization that has been working in the northwest part of the Dominican Republic since 1994. Over 8000 international volunteers have joined us since 1994, with the majority of focus being on education. Originally focused solely on the local orphanages, thanks to volunteer growth the focus has expanded to include additional needs in the community. One area of true need is health education and treatment."This is a well organized program that really helps the children."

Familiy VolunteeringAn Orphanage Outreach trip is a great experience to share with your family. We encourage families to join us any week of the year to make a big impact in the lives of many children."For me this trip was about the kids. They were so friendly and welcoming. Right away we became friends. The boys taught me how to play baseball better. We climbed trees together, caught bugs for the bug lab together, they stole my hat and called me "Mono" (monkey) - Wilman called me "Crazy Face" - and I chased after them. They loved it, and so did I. The night before I left, my friend Alex couldn't sleep. He came over early in the morning to say good-bye. We sat together under a tree and just hung out. I knew he was really sad. I'm glad we became friends, but I am sorry I had to leave him."

Individual VolunteersEach year many volunteers travel with us solo. You don't need to have a team to make a big difference!"Orphanage Outreach provides volunteers with an amazing opportunity to share a small part of their lives with a group of very special children. Whether playing outside or teaching English, each smile and interaction led to a renewed perspective on life and the meaning of family. After a week of memories, I feel that I've carried away a small part of each child with me, and that each one has taught me just a bit more about myself and the world around me. What I took away from this experience far exceeded what I put in."

Orphanage Outreach University Education Fund
Jim Mollen was one of the founding board members of Orphanage Outreach. At the time, he was working for the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta. He put together the first Orphanage Outreach web site. He was a favorite of the kids at the orphanage, and made numerous trips to the Dominican Republic to work with them. Jim left Coca-Cola in 2002 to accept a position with the U.S. State Department. There, he volunteered to work in Iraq toward reconstruction of the education system. He was the primary American liaison to the Iraqi Ministry of Education. He worked there for 16 months, and was due to come home on December 1, 2004. Tragically, he was killed by an assassin's bullet on November 24, 2004, a week before his planned departure.
In Jim's memory, his family and Orphanage Outreach established the Jim Mollen Memorial University Education Fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide funding for university education to children from the orphanage. Because our mission is to provide opportunities for orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children, the university program is the pinnacle of the opportunities we can offer these children. Currently, four young women from the Monte Cristi orphanage are enrolled in the university program. The cost is about $1000/month/student, to cover all their housing, food, transportation, supplies, tuition, medical.
