"It's an amazing experience that I wouldn't trade for the world. I would definitely do it again. Volunteering at Orphanage Outreach is something that I will never regret, or forget."

"I felt like this was a trip was an adventure. I was in an unfamiliar country and the living conditions were pretty basic. What was really rewarding was meeting other people like myself who were willing to endure these conditions to do something for the benefit of others. As far as the children are concerned, I was priveledged to be able to engage with people who really valued my presence and who I could really make a difference for."
"Before my Orphanage Outreach trip, I had been to the resort areas of the Dominican Republic three times on vacations. I loved being at the resorts, but was always fascinated by the country itself... the way people lived and what they were like, the history... I would literally sit glued to the windows on the bus rides from the airport to hotels, trying to observe and take in as much as I could. Orphanage Outreach allowed me to satisfy my curiosity about the country. I actually had no idea I would learn as much as I did. I got more out of this trip than I could have ever imagined when signing up. It was tough to meet the kids and then leave them so quickly and I have doubts about the impact I personally made, but I know that as an organization Orphanage Outreach is definately doing something positive for the people of Monte Cristi. I came home shocked, proud, refreshed, in awe and wanting to find more opportunities to volunteer. Unfortunately, people in the United States are not as friendly as people in Monte Cristi and one thing that I will always miss is being able to smile and say hello to every person I pass. I have tried it at home and it is just not the same. The people in Monte Cristi were the friendliest, most gracious group of people that I have ever met. I may not have personally left a lasting impact, but Orphanage outreach has left one on me and I know they are doing the same for others."

College Program Overview

A team from Villanova University volunteered with Orphanage Outreach October 10-17, 2009. They taught English and public health classes at the Rosa Smester grade school.

An Orphanage Outreach trip is a great option for individual college students or a college alternative break team. You are invited to join us any week or weeks of the year. Students of all majors are welcome and have the ability to make a significant impact in the communities where we are working.

"This experience truly changes your perspective. The children are beyond amazing and the OO staff is so well organized and enthusiastic to help you make this experience perfect. Nothing in the world beats the love, hope, and affection you receive from the kids."
Taylor Deutsch, University of Virginia

Are you going to make a difference? Orphanage Outreach strives to provide direct service opportunities that meet the needs of the communities where we are working. We invite you to get involved to start making an impact through one of the following programs!

  • Spanish Immersion [learn more]

If you haven't led a team to a developing country before (and even if you have), you will appreciate the "turn key" approach we take. We will purchase the insurance, meet you at the airport, arrange the meals, housing, ground transportation, and projects. You'll still be busy, but it will be time well spent supporting your team and the direct service; not managing basic logistics.

Logistics/Health & Safety

Our philosophy is to offer a "turn-key" approach to volunteering. You and your team should not be worrying about the basic logistics of your trip; you should instead be focused on the difference you are making in the community. Because we manage all of your ground transportation, food and housing, we are also able to manage the the health and safety of each volunteer.

It is natural and prudent to have concerns about health and safety when traveling overseas to a developing country. Here are some comments concerning these issues relative to traveling with Orphanage Outreach to the Dominican Republic:

Health:

  • Only purified bottled water is used for cooking and drinking.
  • Mosquito nets are provided for sleeping.
  • A competent, professional clinic is located near the orphanage.
  • Emergency medical evacuation is included in your insurance.
  • Additional medical precaution information is located in the Volunteer Guide.

Safety and Security:

  • You will be living and working on the orphanage grounds and the local schools.
  • You will usually be living and working with 20-70 other volunteers.
  • You may be allowed to walk several blocks into the center of town as an organized group to buy ice cream, snacks, etc.
  • The orphanage is located in small, rural towns. The people in the Dominican Republic are very friendly, with no anti-American sentiment. Orphanage Outreach volunteers are welcomed.
  • Since 1994, we have had over 9,000 volunteers working with us in the Dominican Republic, with no issues of a volunteer’s personal safety being threatened.
